While power consumption and energy use for compute has always been both a challenge and a focus for innovation across the industry, recent trends in power consumption for processors and systems are pointing toward a significant acceleration in energy use. Many factors shed light on this inflection point ranging from the physics of device scaling to the explosive growth in compute-intensive workloads necessary for our connected, big-data era. Our industry needs a revolution in cross-disciplinary innovative solutions, from transistor to software, to support worldwide compute demand without overwhelming our power generation infrastructure and the environment. This talk will review trends, driving factors, and promising solutions to meet this challenge.
