David Will is the Head of Innovation for Island Conservation, a globally focused non-profit committed to preventing extinctions on islands by removing invasive species, where his role is to accelerate the field of island restoration by pursuing novel methods that can reduce the cost, increase the safety, and improve the feasibility of a proven conservation action. These experiences include implementing technology in the field on more than 15 island restoration projects spanning from the sub-Antarctic to the tropical Pacific. David’s team completed the world’s first drone powered rat eradication in 2019 and lead programs focused on scaling drone technology for island restoration, implementing machine learning and quantitative modeling to accelerate real-time conservation decision making, and investigating the feasibility of gene drives to eradicate invasive rodents by biasing a population to a single sex.
